In this article I will be describing the horizontal and vertical circulation of Salt Lake City Public Library. This is a project that reconciles the building with it surroundings (other important buildings located nearby) and the context. This library is framing the new Civic Plaza and other libraries that already exist and the City County Building and park.
The horizontal circulation is placed in a way that you can walk through the entire building and at the same time connects you to the outside, the facade of the building is made of glass and when you walk you can aprecciate the view of the context. There are ramps connecting the different sides of the floors and when you walk through them you're not just connected to the place which you're headed but also the spaces located on the floors bellow and above you. It's amazing how from a single point people are able to see the interior spaces of the structure and the exterior ones at the same time. The horizontal circulation also allows you to know if you're directing to a private or public space because you have a focal point and you can see how the space closes itself announcing it's private or stays open saying it's public. And in the exterior of the building the entrance of it is framed by big collumns that are holding a curve structure that completely invites you to walk through it and straight inside the library.
The vertical circulation is comformed by the stairs and the elevator primarly. They are visible since the second you enter the building, they are big and tall elements that rise inside the building. When people are walking through them they can appreciate the activities that are happening bellow them. They connect diverse situations and let people know what's going on in the entire structure. If you're of the first floor you are entering a space that's open, has common areas, people are talking, is public. But as you're going up is easy to know that the spaces are becoming more and more private, it's a quality of the building and the fact that people are able to perceive it tells you the circulation has been placed in the right place. The elevator allows you to see the context too and as you're going up you're amazed by it, you can also appreciate the multiple situations happening in all the building.
After seeing pictures of the building, reading the proposal of the project and analyze the vertical and horizontal circulation I can say that it's a very complete project that accomplished a lot of he aspects all architects should take into consideration when designing. In this case we have a building that was design considering the context and it doesn't only fits well in it, it uses it as part of the sructure itself and the route people has to walk in order to enter the building and moving through it. All the circulation was placed so you can move from one space to another and feel how they relate to each other and what activities are taking place in them. And the fact that the viewer can observe practicaly the entire space from any point of the circulation is a reflection of how well thought and executed the project is.
